Evolution Simulator

This simulation demonstrates natural selection by showing how organisms adapt to different environmental conditions. Watch how populations change over time in response to different temperatures and food availability.

Key Points

  • Organisms move around and consume food (green dots)
  • Organisms need food to survive and reproduce
  • Organisms can only eat food that is similar in size to them e.g. small organisms eat small food
  • The environment affects how much food there is, the rate of growth, and the dsitribution of different sized food
  • Population size and traits will change over generations
  • You can observe these changes in real-time through the graphs
  • The simulation is meant to illustrate the concept of natural selection but it does have it's limitations. It might be interesting to consider what these are

Instructions

  1. Choose a climate type (Temperate, Arctic, or Tropical)
  2. Click 'Start' to begin the simulation
  3. Watch how the population changes over time
  4. Once the organisms are established, try changing the climate to see what happens
  5. The simulation is meant to illustrate the concept of natural selection but it does have it's limitations. It might be interesting to consider what these are
